Papua New Guinea or PNG officially the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, is an Oceanian country that occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and its offshore islands in Melanesia, a region of the southwestern Pacific Ocean north of Australia. Its capital, located along its southeastern coast, is Port Moresby. The western half of New Guinea forms the Indonesian provinces of Papua and West Papua. Papua New Guinea is divided into four regions, which are not the primary administrative divisions that are quite significant in many aspects of government, commercial, sporting and other activities. And PNG has 22 province-level divisions: twenty provinces.
Mt. Hagen is by far the region's largest town (and the capital of the Western Province) and it wasn't that many years ago when farmers could be seen proudly strutting through Hagen's market in traditional clothing. The men favoured wide belt of beaten bark with a drape of strings in front and a rear covered by a bunch of leaves attached to belt (known collectively as tanket or arse gras). women wore string skirts and hung cuscus fur "scarfs" around their neck. such attire is now reserved for singsings and political rallies but the proud swagger lives on. About PNG, there are the most popular festival which is Goroko Show, Mt. Hagen Festival, Melanesia festival, Warwagiwa Festival. and much more. The biggest Festival in PNG is Goroka Show. It's held over the Independence Day weekend (mid-September) at the National Sport Institute's Sport Oval. It attracts more singsings (dance traditional) group than the Mt. Hagen show and there are also bands and other cultural activities, as well as some elements of an agricultural show. The show is the glamour event on the social calendar for many performers and it's extraordinary how many feathers one person can squeeze on an headdress.
Mt. Hagen Festival, show was first staged in 1961 before PNG's Independence as an event to unite the different tribes in the region. It’s not as big as the Goroko Show, but it’s definitely a must-see. It’s held annually, on the third weekend of August. The show's purpose is to share cultural experience and calm the ever-present tribal animosities. Local entertainers from the modern music scene will also perform during the show and local unique arts and crafts will also be on display. Tribes from all over the Western Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG) and neighboring tribes from the Jiwaka Province will be in 'Kangeh town' Mt. Hagen to display their unique 'singsings' (cultural dances).
One of prettiest island in the South Pacific under volcanic ash is Rabaul island. There are tunnels and caverns in the highsides around Rabaul. And also, there is festival which is held here, called Warwagiwa Festival. This festival (first two weeks of July) is a great occasion, the last three days of which dukduks and tumbuans (masked forest spirits, dukduks are the taller ones) come out of the sea from canoes at dawn to dance. At Night Baining fire dance perform, fire walking in huge masks, with a live snake.
